A truly effective integration must coordinate the<strong> robot, CNC, gripping systems, safety devices, and process logic<\/strong>, precisely defining which system controls each phase of the cycle and what conditions must be met before the cycle can begin. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this reason, when designing a CNC-controlled system, the choice of interface and communication logic is just as important as the choice of robot. These include functions dedicated to communication and integrated control, with the ability to display robot information on the CNC and vice versa. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the choice should not be based solely on the available protocol: <strong>the correct approach is to identify the architecture that ensures the level of communication, diagnostics, and safety required by the application.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"CNC_Commands_and_Robot_Control\"><\/span>CNC Commands and Robot Control<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another aspect to consider is how commands are managed between the CNC and the robot.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FANUC architectures include solutions that allow the CNC to issue commands to the robot or to use the robot as the central element in cycle management.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FANUC, for example, offers solutions such as <strong>Robot G-Code<\/strong>, which allows the robot\u2019s movement to be programmed using G-code commands from the CNC, and <strong>Robot ON-SITE<\/strong>, which enables the robot to interact with the machine\u2019s G-code program via a specific interface.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This type of approach can simplify integration in certain contexts, but it does not eliminate the need to properly design the system\u2019s logic.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question to ask, therefore, is not just \u201c<em>which control should I use?<\/em>\u201d, but:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Who should control that function, at what stage of the cycle, and under what safety conditions?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is this logic that makes industrial integration robust.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"MT-LINKi_What_Its_Really_For\"><\/span>MT-LINKi: What It\u2019s Really For<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MT-LINKi is FANUC software designed for connecting machines and for collecting, managing, and displaying production data. It can acquire information from FANUC CNCs, robot controllers, OPC UA-compatible PLCs, and other supported machines. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this reason, MT-LINKi is particularly useful when the goal of integration is not only to automate loading and unloading, but also <strong>to make production cell data available<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can, for example, help display machine status and analyze operational information.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, it is important not to confuse this level with the cell\u2019s primary interlock and safety logic: <strong>a data collection system does not replace the safety architecture required to coordinate the robot and the machine tool.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a proper design, therefore, at least three levels must be distinguished:<\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>process control<\/strong>, i.e., the robot-CNC sequence;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>safety<\/strong>, i.e., the authorizations and shutdowns necessary to protect people and the equipment;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>data collection and monitoring<\/strong>, where tools such as MT-LINKi can play an important role.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Safety_in_Fanuc_Robot_and_CNC_Integration\"><\/span>Safety in Fanuc Robot and CNC Integration<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Safety should not be an afterthought at the end of the project. It must be defined alongside the cell architecture. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>ISO 10218-2:2025<\/strong> standard specifically addresses the safety of robotic applications and cells and covers design, integration, commissioning, operation, and maintenance. The assessment and mitigation of machine risks also refer to the principles defined by ISO 12100. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a robot cell controlled by a CNC, the following aspects\u2014among others\u2014must therefore be evaluated:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>access to the work area;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>doors and interlocks;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>emergency stops;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>conditions under which the robot and machine stop;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>restart after an interruption;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>operator presence in the hazardous area;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>status of the gripper and workpiece;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>any loss of power or communication;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>alarm handling;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>manual mode, setup, and maintenance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One particularly important point concerns <strong>restarting<\/strong>: closing a door or restoring a safe condition should not automatically be interpreted as consent to restart. FANUC itself emphasizes this principle in its safety guidelines. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Safety_and_communication_are_not_the_same_thing\"><\/span>Safety and communication are not the same thing.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the most common mistakes made when designing an integration.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A signal such as \u201crobot ready\u201d does not equate to a safety enable.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Process logic can determine whether the robot is in the correct position to begin an operation; the safety function, on the other hand, must ensure that the operation can be performed without creating hazardous conditions.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two approaches must complement each other, but they must not be confused.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Best_Practices_for_Reliable_Integration\"><\/span>Best Practices for Reliable Integration<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To design an effective Fanuc robot and CNC integration, it is helpful to follow some fundamental principles.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Define_the_Cycle_Sequence_First\"><\/span>1. Define the Cycle Sequence First<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before programming the robot and CNC, you must describe the complete production cycle: initial state, loading, machining, unloading, inspection, fault handling, and return to the initial state.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Define_a_signal_matrix\"><\/span>2. Define a signal matrix<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each I\/O or communication variable must have a specific function, an activation condition, and an associated response.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Explicitly_handle_errors\"><\/span>3. Explicitly handle errors<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A robust integration must account for what happens when:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the robot fails to reach the position;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the gripper fails to detect the part;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the CNC enters an alarm state;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a door is opened;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>communication is interrupted;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>machining authorization is missing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An error must not leave the system in an ambiguous state.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Separate_Control_Safety_and_Supervision\"><\/span>4. Separate Control, Safety, and Supervision<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Process control, safety functions, and data acquisition must be designed as distinct but coordinated layers.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Plan_for_Diagnostics_and_Maintenance\"><\/span>5. Plan for Diagnostics and Maintenance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An automated system must also be designed with the people in mind who will be diagnosing it months or years after installation.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clear messages, signal documentation, up-to-date schematics, and recovery procedures drastically reduce downtime.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Simulate_and_test_before_startup\"><\/span>6. Simulate and test before startup<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simulation allows you to verify the sequence, identify conflicts, optimize movements, and arrive at the installation site with a design that has already been validated.
